Stortorget – The oldest square in Scandinavia

Stortorget, The Main Square, in Lund, is one of the absolutely oldest in Scandinavia! It got its shape in the end of the 10th century.

The same time Lund got its first church just about 150 metres west from the Main Square. That church was built as a stave church for the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard, or Svend Tveskæg in Danish (Lund and Scania were Danish territories at that time), and it was a bishop church. Only a bishop was allowed to baptise people and the church in Lund had a baptismal as well.

The City Council House (Rådhus) in Lund

The City Council House (Rådhus) in Lund, locates on Main Square (Stortorget),  was opened in 1837, originally it hosted the Town Hall with a restaurant, refreshments room and a storage. There was a banquet hall also, Knutssallen, now the official ceremonies and events take place in this hall.

After a 45 years the Town Hall's building became too small for the city administration. So this building was left to City Council House in 1899-1900. The City Council, the City Court, the magistrate, the police and others were located here.

Winter walk in snowy Lund

It is a very nice experience to catch the snow in Lund! According to statistical data Lund has about 7-14 days of snow every winter. It doesn't mean that it has to be two weeks of snow in Lund. Not at all. The snow is usually coming for one-two days and then just melting away because of plus degrees outside. But these one-two days are so amazing and charming in Lund! You can't just sit inside, you are hurrying to the city centre to catch a fantastic winter atmosphere. Lucky those who managed to visit snowy Lund.

Destination Lund invites you to join our snowy city walk!
