Uppåkra
Archaeological Centre produced a short presentation film in English, about the
treasures of Uppåkra.
Dick Harrison, the
professor of history in Lund University, is telling about the importance and
uniqueness of Uppåkra - the biggest city formation in Iron Age and Vikings Age,
located just a few kilometres from modern Lund.
The findings in Uppåkra
date back to the late Viking Age rather than the early Middle Ages. By that
time there was a large city formation in Uppåkra, located just south of the
current Lund. According to Egil Skallagrimssons Icelandic tale this city was in
fact called Lund. The city was the largest Viking town in Northern Europe,
about seven times as big as Birka outside Stockholm.
Still many
unanswered questions remain about the relationship between the current Lund and
Viking Lund in Uppåkra.
Every summer there
are regular guided tours in Uppåkra, where you have an opportunity to visit the
archaeological place and to hear a fantastic stories from the past.
