All Saints Church is
situated roughly 600 meters north of Lund Cathedral, close to Allhelgonabacken,
the place where All Saints’ Monastery (Allhelgona klostret) was located during
the Medieval. The address: Bredgatan, 34.
The church was
designed by Helgo Zettervall in the Gothic revival style. The construction work
began in 1887 and the church was opened on All Saints’ Day 1891. It was the
first large newly built church in Lund since Medieval Age (unlike restorations
and rebuilding).
Johan Henrik Thomander
(1798–1865), the bishop of Lund, had a consideration that the Lund Cathedral become
too small for all worshippers. In addition, the Cathedral had a significantly
less monumental appearance that time than today, so the new church building in Lund
was considered by necessity.
The church tower
is 72 m long so it is the second highest building in Lund (after Ideon
Gateway). There are three watches on a church tower made by Ohlssons
klockgjuteri in Ystad. The watches were opened in 1966, for the 75th anniversary of Allhelgona kyrkan.
There are about
2,000 seats in the church in total.
All Saints’ Church
has a fascinating interior with a painted windows and decoration paintings.
The choir windows
are made in Innsbruck and painted with a scenes related to Feast of the
Ascension, from Apostolic constitution.
The wooden altar
is made by Carl Johan Dyfverman
Decoration
paintings in the church are made by Svante Thulin
