“Bullis” was slang for the street Klostergatan, monastery street, and allude to Boulevard since it was seen as one of the most beautiful streets in the city, and people were strolling there in the evenings.
The street is pretty much still looking as it did hundred years ago. Although the name “Bullis” it never was a real boulevard and in the 1940th the nick name was used by fewer people, and nowadays it is not used at all.
The first photo is taken around 1900. In the middle background you can see the tower of the small monastery church. Notice the policeman wearing a lovely pickelhaube.
The two gentlemen in the foreground are Johan August Ekman, who was archbishop in Sweden from 1900, and Olof Holmström, professor in practical theology here in Lund and vicar in Hällestad parish outside Lund.
In 1922, automobiles were not anything ordinary citizen had or used, but in this picture, automobiles have parked in the street. You can also see one of the cathedral towers rise above the rooftops.
To make this picture the photographer Per Bagge must be standing inside Grand Hotel. The photo is taken the first of May 1929 and illustrates all the people, many students in white caps, strolling down the monastery street.
Welcome to Lund!
